Glossary

Amputation:
Cutting-off of a limb or part of a limb.

Atherosclerosis:
Deposition of plaque in the walls of blood vessels leading to narrowing of the blood vessels.

Cardiovascular disease:
Disease of the heart and blood vessels.

Cholesterol:
The most abundant fat present in animal tissues and certain foods; it circulates in the blood and can lead to fat plaques

Dyslipidemia:
Abnormal levels of fats (cholesterol and/or triglycerides) or lipoproteins in the blood.

Gangrene:
Death of cells or a portion of tissue due to decrease in the blood supply.

HDL cholesterol:
High-density-lipoprotein (HDL), a fat found in the blood, takes extra cholesterol from the blood to the liver for removal. Also called "good" cholesterol.

Hypercholesterolemia:
Excess of cholesterol in the blood.

Hypertriglyceridemia:
Increase in triglyceride levels in the blood.

LDL cholesterol:
Low-density lipoprotein (LDL), a fat found in the blood, takes cholesterol around the body to where it is needed for cell repair and also deposits it on the inside of artery walls. Also called "bad" cholesterol.

Lipoproteins:
Composed of fat and protein; help in transport of cholesterol in the body.

Type 2 Diabetes:
Non-insulin dependent diabetes.

Triglyceride:
The storage form of fat in the body. High triglyceride levels may occur when diabetes is out of control.

Uricosuric:
Excretion of uric acid in urine
